WHAT IS PERINEURAL INJECTION THERAPY (PIT)?

Perineural Injection Therapy is a regenerative and novel treatment method used to treat pain and functional losses. It is also known as the Lyftogt technique.

Like all cells in the body, nerve cells need various nutrients, including glucose (sugar), to stay healthy. When a nerve is injured, inflamed, and glucose-deficient, it sends continuous signals that the body interprets as pain.

Neuropathic pain arises from damage to part of the nerve cells, impairment of their functions, or a change in their excitation threshold. Dysfunction in the nerve cell affects the structure and function of all tissues connected to that nerve.

Chronic changes can occur in organs, muscles, joints, blood vessels, bones, and skin. Neuropathic pain can be felt anywhere in the body.

Perineural Injection Therapy is a technique applied subcutaneously (under the skin) to repair the function of damaged nerves and tissues.

Compression or damage to the nerves providing sensation to the skin over the joint leads to pain and dysfunction in the tissues and muscles around the joint.

Perineural injections have been shown to reduce edema in the tissue, relieve pain, and improve function.

Perineural Injection Therapy is effective in treating pain related to joint, muscle, tendon, and ligament injuries (both acute and chronic).

The treatment is applied to the problematic areas identified during the patient’s examination by the physician. It is administered in sessions. Sometimes a single session may be sufficient, while in other cases, it may require 3-4, or even 5-6 sessions.

For Which Conditions is the PIT Method Used?

Primarily, PIT is successfully applied in all conditions involving pain. Commonly treated conditions include:

  • Neuropathic pain
  • Headache (Trigeminal neuralgia, Migraine, Cluster headache)
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Restless Leg Syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
  • Postherpetic Neuralgia (Shingles pain)
  • Facial Paralysis
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles tendon injury
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Meralgia Paresthetica
  • De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis
  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfer’s elbow
  • Sciatic pain
  • Drop foot
  • Pain in the neck, back, knee, shoulder, hip, elbow, wrist, hand, and ankle

How is PIT Therapy Performed?

Perineural Injection Therapy involves injecting a 5% dextrose (sugar) solution near superficial nerves. Since superficial nerves are connected to deeper nerves and muscles, PIT treats the entire muscle-nerve-vascular bundle while addressing superficial nerves. After a detailed patient examination, the 5% dextrose solution is injected into sensitive points with a mesotherapy needle (a very small and short needle). Pain reduction and functional improvement can begin within minutes after the injection. With repeated sessions, pain either completely disappears or significantly decreases. Treatment sessions are conducted every 3-7 days. There are no restrictions after the treatment.

Administering the injections under ultrasound guidance increases the success of the treatment.
